Janatella fellula, Tatama NP, Colombia Adrian Hoskins
Introduction
The tribe Melitaeini is of worldwide distribution. It includes the Crescents and Checkerspots of North America, and also many familiar European species such as the Marsh, Spotted and Heath Fritillaries.
Janatella are closely related to Castalia, Anthanassa and Eresia, in fact that these genera can only be distinguished by microscopic examination of the male genitalia.
There are 3 Janatella species - hera from Guyana, fellula from Colombia, and leucodesma which is the most widespread species being found from Nicaragua to Colombia and Venezuela.
Janatella fellula is endemic to Colombia.
Habitats
This species is found in cloudforest at elevations between about 800-1600m.
Lifecycle
To be completed.
Adult behaviour
Both sexes nectar at flowers, but the butterfly is more often seen when males settle in hot sunshine to imbibe moisture from forest paths and trails.
