Pyrginae, popularly known as Flats or Spreadwings, are a
cosmopolitan subfamily distributed across temperate and tropical
habitats throughout the world. In the Americas there are 990
species, of which about 580 are assigned to the tribe Pyrgini.
Noctuana comprises of 6 known species,
distributed variously from Mexico to Peru. The underside hindwings
of 2 species - stator and
haematospila are marked with numerous
red studs - hence the common name.
Noctuana haematospila is a found in Colombia and Venezuela.

The larva is pale translucent green, with a black head. It feeds on
balsa Ochroma ( Malvaceae ).
Males bask on
bare soil or low foliage in early morning or late afternoon. Both
sexes visit a wide variety of flowers for nectar.
