Cosmosoma ( near subflamma ), San Pedro, Peru

Introduction

This attractive wasp-mimicking moth has a wingspan of circa 4cms. It has been tentatively identified by Martin Honey : "The best match I can make at present for this species is Cosmosoma subflamma but that species has iridescent blue spots on the abdomen, not an entirely blue abdomen."

Photographed at San Pedro, Manu cloudforest, Peru, altitude 1400m.

Adult behaviour

Attracted to tungsten lighting. The bright colours suggest that this species may fly in daylight as well as nocturnally.
