Moths of the Amazon and Andes
Unidentified
Ctenucha  ( species unidentified )

Superfamily - NOCTUOIDEA

Family - EREBIDAE

subfamily - ARCTIINAE

Tribe -

Ctenucha  unidentified species, Satipo, Peru  Adrian Hoskins
Introduction
There are about 6000 known species of Arctiinae in the neotropical region. Most are noxious to birds and have aposematic or diematic warning coloration.
The identification of this insect is unconfirmed but I believe it to probably be a member of the genus Ctenucha. This genus despite its name is placed in the tribe Arctiini rather than the Ctenuchiini. It contains about 45 species, variously distributed from California to Chile.
The moth was recorded at Satipo in the eastern Andes of Peru.
Habitats
The illustrated moth was seen in transitional rainforest / cloudforest habitat, in the vicinity of a fast flowing stream, altitude circa 700m.
Lifecycle
To be completed.
Adult behaviour

This is a diurnal species. The illustration is of a male imbibing moisture from a boulder.
