Opthalmophora
( unidentified
species, ref 044 ), Manu cloudforest, 1400m, Peru |
Introduction
There
are 115 described species in the tribe Palyadini which includes the genera
Palyas, Phrygionus,
Pityeja, Argyrotome,
Opthalmoblysis and
Opthalmophora. The latter is known also by the synonyms
Opisthoxia and Agryroplutodes.
Many of the moths
in the genus Opthalmophora feature an unusually
positioned ocellus in the subapical area of the hindwing, although this is not
present in all species. The various species differ greatly in colour and
pattern, and vary between about 3-5 cms in wingspan. They are confined to the
neotropical region, distributed from Florida to Argentina.
Habitats
This is a cloudforest species, photographed at an altitude of 1400m in Manu
national park, Peru.
Lifecycle
To be completed.
Adult behaviour
The moths come readily to tungsten, fluorescent or UV lighting,
and are active from shortly after dusk to about midnight.
