Introduction

This species had a wingspan of about 10cms, i.e. the size of a hawkmoth. It is possible that it might be a member of the Saturniidae, but despite it's huge size and thick furry body my gut feeling is that it is a member of the Pyralidae - a family of moths whose average wingspan is only about 3 cms. The moth was attracted to fluorescent lighting at San Pedro - cloudforest habitat at an elevation of about 1400m in the Manu, Peru.
