( please contact me if you can identify this species )

Photographed at San Pedro, Madre de Dios, Peru. Wingspan circa 35mm.

Thyridid moth
Siculodes aurorula
THYRIDIDAE

Moths adopt some very strange postures when at rest, but few are as odd as the posture of this species. Photographed in the Arima valley in the northern range mountains of Trinidad, which are an extension of the Andes. Click the thumbnail to see a full description and full size image.

No common name
Rhodochlora brunneipalpis.
GEOMETRIDAE

Photographed at San Pedro, Madre de Dios, Peru. Wingspan circa 30mm. This member of the Geometridae belongs to a group known as Emeralds.

Unidentified moth 097
( please contact me if you can identify this species )

Photographed in Rondonia, Brazil, wingspan circa 55mm. The long backward-pointing antennae projecting palpi and general posture suggest this might be a member of the Pyralidae, but the wing shape is more characteristic of the Drepanidae or Geometridae.

Swallow-tailed moth
Nepheloleuca illiturata
GEOMETRIDAE

Photographed in Rondonia, Brazil. Wingspan circa 65mm. Family Geometridae. A common species.

Unidentified moth 096
( please contact me if you can identify this species )

Photographed at San Pedro, Madre de Dios, Peru. Altitude 1400m. The wing shape, markings, antennae and short, narrow labial palpi suggest to me that this might be a member of the THYRIDIDAE, commonly known as Picture-wing moths. Possibly a member of the genus Dysodia ?

No common name
Paectes chrysoplaga
NOCTUIDAE

Photographed at San Pedro, Madre de Dios, Peru. Kindly identified by Martin Honey as Paectes chrysoplaga.

Unidentified moth 093
GEOMETRIDAE
( please contact me if you can identify this species )

Photographed at San Pedro, Madre de Dios, Peru. A Geometrid in the "emerald" group. Possibly a member of the genus Oospila ?

No common name
Dyspteris tenuivitta
GEOMETRIDAE

Photographed at San Pedro, Madre de Dios, Peru. Note the hindwings are very small in proportion to the forewings.

Unidentified moth 085
( please contact me if you can identify this species )

Photographed at San Pedro, Madre de Dios, Peru. Possibly a member of the Thyatiridae or Notodontidae. The forelegs bear a dense covering of long scales which give them a fat and furry appearance.

Blotched Beauty
Pantherodes sp
GEOMETRIDAE

Photographed at San Pedro, Madre de Dios, Peru. The pattern is similar to that of Tiger moths ( Arctiidae ) but this is actually a member of the Geometridae. Kindly identified by Martin Honey as "a species of Pantherodes. There are a number of similar species but this may be colubraria"
