Introduction
There are 5 species in the genus Timelaea, all of which are endemic to China.
The genus Timelaea caused confusion to taxonomists for many years. In the past it was incorrectly placed in the subfamily Melitaeinae. Wahlberg's 2008 revision of the Nymphalidae however places it in the Apaturinae, indicating that its closest relatives are the Palaearctic Apatura Purple Emperors and the neotropical genus Doxocopa.
Timelaea albescens is found in western China and on Taiwan.
