Pearl-bordered Fritillary
Clossiana euphrosyne, male. Compare
the pattern of black markings in the median area of the hindwings
with the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary below :
Small
Pearl-bordered Fritillary
Clossiana selene, male. The submarginal markings
take the form of contiguous black chevrons - compare with the crescents of
euphrosyne ( top picture ).
Pearl-bordered
Fritillary has reddish chevrons on the inner edge of the
submarginal silver spots.
Small Pearl-bordered
Fritillary has prominent black chevrons, veins and post-median
spots. It also has additional silver
spots in the median area of the underside hindwings.
Behavioural differences :
Pearl-bordered Fritillary nectars
almost exclusively at bugle, but sometimes visits dandelions and
hawthorn blossom.
Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary will
nectar at bugle if the butterflies emerge very early, but normally
prefers to visit ragged robin, thistles and wood spurge.
