Introduction
There are about 210 species of Papilio worldwide, about 60 of which occur in the Oriental region.
Black wings, white patches, red crescents and spatulate tails are a common theme among Oriental species, but bootes can easily be distinguished from other similar species by the red streak which runs along the inner margin of the underside hindwing.
Papilio bootes is found in India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tibet and western China.
Habitats
This species is found on forested mountains at elevations between about 1000-2000m.
Lifecycle
To be completed.
Adult behaviour

Papilio bootes is a powerful but very graceful butterfly which sails effortlessly across wide rivers and up and down mountainsides. In Sikkim I accidentally disturbed a mud-puddling male, which I was able to keep in sight for several minutes as it swept back and forth along the distant opposite bank of a wide river. After about 15 minutes it made several nervous approaches before resettling at its original mud-puddling patch, where it remained for over 10 minutes as a group of excited photographers huddled around it!
