Finally some common sense over plastic bags !

We have read a great deal in the media lately about the alleged evils of the throw-away plastic bag, and learnaboutbutterflies fully supports plans to replace them with biodegradable bags, which would reduce pollution and lead to a better environment for wildlife and humans.

However we believe that the media would spend their time better if they campaigned for reduced packaging, biodegradable packaging, and biodegradable products rather than playing into the hands of profiteering supermarket chains who are merely using the campaign as an opportunity to charge customers for what was previously provided free.

Finally some common sense has surfaced :

"Plans to ban or charge for single-use plastic bags are a diversion from real environmental issues", claims government advisor Prof Chris Coggins, a waste and recycling expert for the Dept of Food and Rural Affairs ( DEFRA ) :

"supermarkets could be helping to influence packaging rather than shifting the problem on to consumers"

"they have a much bigger role to play in influencing the packaging they use"

"they have power in terms of what they buy and how it is packed".

Well said Professor Coggins !
