Family - NYMPHALIDAE
subfamily - SATYRINAE
Tribe - SATYRINI
subtribe -
Coenonympha california columbiana British Colombia, Canada Martin Gascoigne-Pees
Introduction
The genus Coenonympha comprises of about 45 species distributed variously across North America, Europe and temperate Asia. There are 4 species in North America - tullia and nipisiquit are large dark species similar in pattern to california, while the remaining species haydenii is devoid of white markings on the underside but has a series or prominent submarginal ocelli on the hindwings.
The taxonomy of california is under review and it is possible that some of the 19 named subspecies may eventually be elevated in rank to full species. Coenonympha california (sensu lato) is found in most of the western states of the USA, and in western Canada. The illustrated taxon columbiana is found only in British Columbia in Canada.
Habitats
This species is found in grassy habitats including open grasslands, chaparral, alpine meadows and pastures, and large open clearings in woodland.
Lifecycle
To be completed.
Adult behaviour

Both sexes nectar at a wide range of flowers. They roost overnight on flowerheads of Plantago and various other herbaceous plants.
